What would bring chills to your spine?

He Saluted

So, they entered in
To fill the emptiness,
Stared ahead at white roses,
Fresh cut
While hymns filled the statues ears
With well known tunes
Of worship

They prayed,
Spoke in dead-pan rituals,
While wandering eyes dropped tears,
Bittersweet
Over a hither photo smiling from the alter
And a veteran’s source of honor
In triangle fold

Now, standing straight,
In gallant cloth of Soldier Form,
Came one who paused before the soul
Now gone,
Then snapped Salute of thankful pride
Towards ashes resting there…
In silent mourn

I like how your poem starts: So, ...
as if you're sitting with me, telling a story.
A good story at that.
And I've been to a few of these services.
