I have a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina 3.1 Motor, 4 Door and in the mornings I will go out to start it and it will try to crank, but it acts like it does not have enough fuel to stay started and then it wont crank at all and sometimes I have went out to try it in the mornings and it would not even try to start, you could just turn the key and it sounds like it just can't start. By the time 1 or 2 pm rolls around it's ready to start and for the rest of the day its just fine till the next morning unless you don't use it after 5pm and then sometimes it will start in the mornings. We think its the Fuel Pump, but we were told by the manager at Advance Auto to beat on the gas tank with a hammer or baseball bat and I have used a heavy wrench thinking that it would jar the fuel pump, but it wont work. It sits at almost 1/4 tank of gas and so we know that's not the problem. Could it be the fuel pump or something electrical. Oh yea when you turn the key off and on you do hear the clicking noise, but as I said it wont start. I can go out there and try it at 9pm no go, 11pm no go and then the third time it starts. Please help us, were so frustrated and its our only car. I plan to call the Chevrolet Dealership tomorrow and get their opinion, but I was hoping I could find some mechanics on here, that may have heard of this.
We just replaced the starter and the battery is pretty much brand new and the manager there is a certified mechanic. My own cousin who is a mechanic recommended beating the fuel tank. We actually charged the battery the other day, when the starter went out.
Ok so if beating on the gas tank does not work, then could it still be the fuel pump? Could it be that the fuel pump needs time to get enough pressure to stay started, because when I try it, it will act like it will stay started, but before you can even reach the gas pedal to press on it, it looses the gas and then when I try to start it, it just acts like it has no gas, so it wont start. ok, whoever told you to beat on the tank is a fool! It isn't your fuel pump if it tries to crank, it sure sounds like the battery isn't putting out enough power to turn over the engine. Have the battery and alternator checked and I bet you find your problem. Advance Auto does not have mechanics working there, anyone can work there

change the fuel filter ! when it sits overnight dirt can settle in the filter and stop the flow of fuel until it gets washed away. then the next morning the same way. once the dirt gets washed away in the filter your good the rest of the day.

If beating on the fuel tank works, your fuel pump is nearly dead. With a bad fuel pump, you could have a FULL tank and it wouldn't do any good. The tank is
BELOW the engine. That means it CAN'T produce ANY fuel pressure without the pump.
