What would happen if I were to burn a 16x DVD on my 40x DVD Burner?

I ran the Opti-Drive Software on my new computer. Prior to crashing it rated by DVD Burner as: 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x, 40x. My local computer store sells blank 16x and 50x Philips DVD-R at $10 for 50. Since I read that slower CDs permit for more data accuracy than faster ones I chose the 16x DVDs. Does the DVD rating mean anything? Did I make the correct choice? Will my burner adhere to the 16x speed of the DVDs?

Thank You!

Your burner will only burn to either the maximum capacity of: 1) The blank media 2) The burner's max speed 3) The max write speed you specify.

You're fine with what you bought.
