Whatever happened to all the 2012 Apocalypse rumors?

Considering we're pretty close to December, I thought these rumors would be buzzing around by now as they were years ago. Have people, by any chance, gotten smarter?

Oh, people are mostly getting over it as it finally starts to dawn on them that this is all a hoax to coax money out of simpletons.

Even the most basic premise; that the Mayan calendar ends December 21, 2012, is a lie. The Mayan calendar ends on October 11, 4772. December 21 is just the end of the 12th b'ak'tun. The whole "Doomsday 2012" is based on a single pictogram in the Dresden Codex, that states that "the Third Sun was quenched at the eve of the 13th b'ak'tun". However, given that we are now in the Age of the Fourth Sun, that hardly applies to us, especially considering the other suns lasted 24 and 60 b'ak'tuns.
