I'm looking to buy a cheap car this Summer. (will likely be a craigslist buy) I'm looking for something with some muscle/offroading potentia, but cheap and retro from the 80s or 90s.. A couple cars I have in mind would be like a Toyota 4Runner or a Chevy Blazer. I'm not big on cars very much but I'm looking for something like that. I t would primarily be for college so I wouldn't be driving it TOO much, but I would definitely like something more fuel efficient. I realize trucks/SUVs in general aren't big on that, but I just want to know what cars in that category are best when it comes to fuel efficiency. Thanks
As I said, I totally realize that fuel efficiency back then is nothing compared to now. I just want to know which ones are MOST fuel efficient for the time.

Today's trucks/SUVs are far more fuel efficient than in the 80's/90's. Nobody buys a 20-30 year old truck to save money on gas. My 1991 Ford truck gets a whopping 13 MPG on a GOOD day.

ford ranger
toyota tacoma
ford bronco 2- the small ones
ford explorer sport
1991 honda civic wagon- pretty much like the 80's cr-v's
1987 toyota tercel wagon- pretty much like the 80's rav4's
dodge ram 50
geo tracker
vw fox truck
chevy s10
kia sportage
mazda mpv
nissan pathfinder
el camino

Gas was cheap in the 1980's so there aren't any trucks or wagons of that vintage that were fuel efficient.
