What's a good hunting rifle to start with?

I'm familiar with rifles (range shooting), I live in NY, and I'm planning on going hunting for Boar/Dear/Big Game. I researched and read a few articles that mentioned Savage Arms for there design and prices and .308 seemed to be the general consensus for caliber. Thoughts, opinions, advice? Thanks!
 
yes, that is a good caliber. Lots of good rifles around in that caliber. The 30-06 is a step up from that round, there are more weights of bullets to pick from. It is an old game round that has been around for over 100 years. Lots and lots of good rifles around in that caliber, including the Savage.
