im 15 i have my permit and my mom
has given me the very reluctant "ok" on me getting a motorcycle(shes not irresponsible for doing so she just understands y i want it) so what is a good starter bike for me? i like the yamaha R1 an the suzuki k8 gsxr but im not sure if those r too good...i dont want anything less than a 600 any ideas?? ps im 5'8

A Kawaski 250 Ninja.
A R1 is heavy and hard to steer especially for beginners.
If you get a 600cc you won't make it through high school but if you insist check out the Yamaha R6

No (and I mean NO) 600cc sportbike is appropriate to start with. They are specialized bikes aimed at EXPERIENCED riders with specific needs. It isn't just the insane speed they are capable of (and I mean insane in a bad way), their handling characteristics are not conducive to normal street riding.

I advise starting out with no more than a 250 cc engine. They are plenty fast for all but the most suicidal, and they are designed to be ridden on the street by recreational riders.

Get whatever you can talk your mom into, I don't know you, so I don't care. But do your mom a favor, and make sure she has enough life insurance to bury you once you assume room temperature.

Edit:
Rider boy, if you're still around in 18 months look us up! Something tells me you are going to win the Darwin award for improving the human race!

Excellent mate, you want a 600cc crotch rocket at 16 as well, good choice (Y) read my question and don't listen to these faggots saying "600cc is too powerful for a beginner" cause they aren't, sportbikes will only go as fast as you tell them to, so you want to really shit your pants, then you have to switch gears all the way up to 5th or 6th gear, none of which you will have the balls to do so. If you keep the revs low and keep your bike in 2nd or 3rd gear with little throttle low then you should be fine, just make sure you know traffic well. Just cause you have common sense on a crotch rocket does not mean other people in cars will have common sense around you.

Do you think that a Ferrari makes a good car for a beginner driver? Should you learn to fly in an F-16? Try Mt. Everest as a first-time mountain climber?
A 600cc sport-bike would be as good a "starter bike" as the above three examples would be good ideas in their respective fields. And just as likely to end in failure/injury/death.

PS: Don't forget to show these answers to your Mom.

PPS: "Rider Boy", at age 16, just has SO much more experience than the other people who answered! Go with his answer! LOL

I'd suggest looking on craigslist and going with a used bike. I'm going to say 600cc and for brands I'm going to say Honda - Cbr600 Suzuki GSXR600 I don't like Kawasaki's and I wouldn't suggest a R6 because it is set up more for the track. I promise that if you get a 1000 you will kill yourself, definitely not a good starter bike. You're going to drop your bike so make sure you get frame sliders. Also don't go skimpy on the gear because that will be your deciding factor on bumps and bruises or road rash and worse. anymore questions just ask... Good luck

No experienced rider will tell you a 600 is a good starter bike. They will tell you this for two reasons. They have the experience and it isn't. Failure to heed this wisdom offered is at your own peril. Dead is forever and stupid gets you there quicker.
