What's next to the rear differential in a 2003 Honda CR-V?

We damaged my friend's 2003 CR-V on a dirt road this past weekend. She went over a puddle hard, and banged the undercarriage. There's a cube-shaped part with wires attached to it to the left and in front of the rear axle that's protected by a metal cage. This cage (and the part it protects) got jammed up into the rear axle. We ended up unbolting the cage so it wouldn't rub on the axle and then driving home.

I'm wondering what that part is so I can be better equipped when going to the mechanic.

Also, the rubber joint covering on the axle got destroyed by the rubbing before we managed to unbolt the cage.

So, I'm also wondering if anyone can give us a general idea of damage estimates.

Thanks.
