I would personally go with a Honda Pilot. They are great SUVs that get pretty decent gas mileage for its size. They also have excellent safety ratings and Honda's are very reliable. The only thing is, since Honda's hold their resale value, they often are a little bit pricier, but then again, they last forever.
I also would not be afraid of going with a Chevy Traverse or a Mazda CX-9. Those are sportier in the way that they look, and the Mazda is actually pretty fun to drive as well. Sporty ride + Sporty suspension + tight sporty steering = a really fun car.
If you have the money, you could always look a little more luxurious ride; the Buick Enclave.
