What's the best way to stop cats from scratching furniture?

Our cat's stay outdoors but we have a screened porch with furniture, rugs and curtains they have access to. What's the best way to stop them from causing damage to the furniture - short of having them declawed!!!!!!
 
get a spray bottle, fill with cold water and squirt them when you catch them doing it
 
Anytime you see them scratching, squirt them with a squirt gun, that's how we trained our cats, very humane, it's only water, and they learn, cat's don't like to be wet!
