Opel works with GM on engines (Ecotech), there is nothing outstanding about the engines and like all things GM subject to early failure.

As far as I know there is nothing like you describe. All the manufacturers can squeeze a lot of power out of a small engine and the costs and consequences on driveability are the same. The last innovation like this was when Walter Skarden invented extractor exhausts for 2 strikes and won everything until industrial espionage made it public.
