Can dvds play in blue ray players?

Do bluerays even have their own players or do they still use dvd players but with blue ray quality? How does all this work?

And what ever happened to HD???

And can normal dvds work in playstation 3 or only blue ray cds?

A DVD is the common disk to use for movies. It stores 4.7 GB which is fine for a standard definition movie (480i or 480p). A Blu-Ray disk is uses a laser with a shorter wavelength which allows it to store much more information (up to 50GB) which makes it ideal for a High-Definition movie (1080i or 1080p), which has a larger file size than a standard definition movie.

Yes, most Blu-Ray players can play DVD's. They are "upconverted" to make them look like a Blu-Ray disk.

A Blu-Ray disk needs a special Blu-Ray disk player. They cannot be played on a standard DVD Player. Like I mentioned above, a Blu-Ray disk has to be read using a laser with a smaller wavelength than a regular DVD, so a DVD player will not be able to play a Blu-Ray Disk.

HD is High-Definition (720p, 1080i, 1080p). A Blu-Ray disk plays back in the highest resolution possible now (1080p). But to see the video in 1080p, you need a 1080p TV.

Yes, a PS3 will be able to play a DVD as well as a Blu-Ray disk.

DVD's can work in Blu-Ray players. They are enhanced to 1080i quality (almost optimum High Def quality). Blu-Ray does have their own disks which are called Blu-Ray disks. They play at 1080p quality (Maximum High Def quality up to date). And yes this applies to playstation 3. I have a playstation 3, and it works just like any other system, but can play Blu-Ray as well. In fact Playstation 3 has the best Blu-Ray to date, because SONY releases updates for the software and playstation 3 can download them. HD-DVD disks do not play in Blu-Ray, because they are of a different format than regular DVD's and Blu-Ray. They are now out of bussiness, because they just brought the quality up to 1080i which blu-ray has better quality and makes regular DVD's to that quality of HD-DVD.

Hope I helped!
