I don't remember much, but I started reading it when I was a kid in the 90's, so it was published before then. All I remember about is is the main character had a robot assistant that hovered over his shoulder, there was a female alien character that had an additional joint between her wrist and elbow, and in a hotel room, there was intelligent carpet that would bring trash to a wall vacuum. Any ideas?
