What's the point of renewing a 2 year contract with t-mobile?

When it costs full price to upgrade your phone? Why shouldn't I just buy another phone for full price and not get in another 2 year contract.
I thought that if you renewed your contract then you would be able to get a free phone and the catch was you had to get a data plan phone. but it looks like you can't even do that now unless you're going into a contract for the first time

can anyone explain what's up?
Also this has to do with a family plan

yea..there service doesn't work in a lot of places as well. ATT has a new go phone plan that is 50 per month with unlimited talk..text
