whats up with the connection on my psp 1001?

I have a psp 1001....the first one that came out. But my internet connection is not working. I tried to type in the wep code from the router, but it didnt go through. I can see the router when it scans, but its not highlighted when i choose my connection; its black while the other options are: 2wire.....etc. I dnt know why its not connecting. I want to download safe, free games for my psp games, but i dnt know the best websites to go to for that. I even tried to update my psp, but the version is 2.00 and it said that it didnt need to be updated. How can i fully get internet on my psp?
