When a battery is being overcharges, does it emits some kind of a gas?

After I switched on the car i opened caps of my battery. Then I found that there are some bubbles(I assume a gas) emitting from the shells. Some says, that happens due to a malfunction in battery charging system and it will cause my battery to be overcharged and damaged. Is this true?
