...driving with hand brake on?why? it engages the four wheel drive ok but it feel likes brakes are on it does not free roll. but it is fine when put back into two wheel drive?
 
As per fatrab, you mustn't use 4 wheel drive in the Sportage unless you're off road. As you've discovered, engaging 4x4 on tarmac will induce 'wind up' (as in clockwork) in the driveline, causing tight steering & the feeling of sticking brakes. Check the handbook if you have one, or book yourself onto a day's offroading course to help you use your car to it's best. Have fun.

If you are doing this on a hard surface it's your diffs locking up, this will eventually damage them. Should only use 4wd on mud, sand or snow.

If its doing it on soft ground you may have a problem with the transfer box.
