When should I ask this girl to prom, if I should at all?

I met this girl a couple weeks ago when she transfered into my class. I really like her, and I'm a pretty shy guy. I don't know if she likes me, but she talks to me and jokes around sometimes. I want to go to prom with her, which is in May. So when should I ask her to prom, or should I get her number and hang out first?
