vacation? I am job-hunting (am currently unemployed), and have finally been called for an interview. (YAY!) Almost a year ago my daughter (and three grandchildren) moved over 4,000 miles away when her husband joined the Army. A few months ago we planned a two-week visit to finally go see them. When should I tell a potential employer about this trip (airline tickets have been bought), and how should I address it? I miss my daughter and grandchildren dearly, and cannot re-schedule this visit, but want to assure any perspective employers of my dedication to attendance.

You should be prepared to cancel your trip. The job is a higher priority. If you bring up your vacation in the interview, it shows that you are not serious about the job and I doubt that you will get an offer.

You may be able to negotiate a start date once they make you an offer, but that's maybe 1-2 weeks of leeway.

Which is the higher priority? I think if this job is important to you, you can cancel the trip.

Maybe you can delay your start date until after you go on the vacation. Maybe you could arrange to reduce it down to 1 week instead of 2.

I would bring it up after getting the job offer or the benefits package. I would simply say, How much time do employees usually give notice prior to a vacation? A few months ago, my family planned to go on vacation and we've already booked the tickets. If necessary, I could cancel the trip.
