When someone talks about somebody behind their back, what should I do?

Since I still go to school, it's a way of life there to talk about everyone, usually in a negative way. I know it's wrong and I have always tried to change the subject or defend the person they're talking about (at least by presenting their POV). But I can't do that if the group is bigger than 3 people (I'm too shy :(

So, what should I do? Just keep silent, walk away or...

Is it enough when you don't say anything in such a situation, or is it as bad as participating in it?
Also, what can I do if I, myself, don't like the person they're gossiping about, e.g. a particular teacher? It makes it hard for me to defend them.

Thanks for any suggestions!
(Why can't people understand that it's wrong to gossip without giving the person a chance to defend him/herself)
