i've always wondered. everytime i see that someone has been hit, they either scream or make a noise that's meant to be audible (of course, all in normal situations). Why??!!?!?!

I am not sure why but it is an unconscious (knee-jerk) reaction that reduces the pain and releases the tension from fear so I can cope with the injury. I also scream as an involuntary reaction when I have an unexpected fright.

I guess it's a second nature reaction to the pain. Like laughing is when something is funny!

because I can't help it when I get hurt. Like when I accidentally burn my hand against the stove or slip and fall on ice. Same for others.

Most people when surprised let out a scream; pain has nothing to do with it.

Although, girls do scream a lot for some reason... no idea why that is.

that is associated with one small part of your brain that detects pain. have you ever noticed that when you get hit you hit back without realizing? your brain detects your pain and moves your brainwaves through different parts of your brain until finally reaching the speech part of your brain and that makes you scream. painfully intriguing isn't it?

It's nature? Animals yelp/whine when injured too. Look forward to seeing some other answers though, good question.
