When you go up stairs, what is the real distance you travel?

By the way, we used our weight as the force in the equation WD = F x D. This may help or may not...
In a GCSE Physics Lesson, we were doing work done and power so we climbed stairs, timed our efforts and worked out the power from there. We used the height of the stairs for the distance moved for work done. This must be wrong as you also move along horizontally. How do you work out the actual distance moved so to find the correct work done.
