Whenever I argue, my cat hides for an hour?

When I get into these angry, yelling sessions with my mom, my cat suddenly runs and hides under the couch. Then he wouldn't come out until an hour later...what's going on? Did I scare him or something?
 
Gee, what do you think? Of course you're scaring. So for the cat's sake - and your poor mother - stop being such a child.
 
Yes. Cats are afraid of loud noises. They also sense tension and it makes them feel unsafe. He is hiding in a safe spot.
 
animals have a strong sense of others emotions, and they probably don't like yelling. So that would make sense because he probably just wants to get away from that
