Im 18 years old and recently I bought a lottery ticket but the retailer asked me for my ID but not to others, why are they unfair and rude?

I found it very embarrassing.

Thanks for your comments everyone.

Because they are required by law to do that.

Edit: And you probably look young. That'll happen to you until your late 20's, early 30's.

At my age, it's a compliment to get carded. Why should it be different when you're within the age of people who might be tempted to acquire and/or use false ID?

Because if caught selling alcohol or cigarettes or lottery tickets to someone under age the person selling to you could lose their job and get a £5000 fine, also the retailer would lose their license to sell alcohol...You have to be over 16 to buy lottery and over 18 to buy cigarettes and alcohol. Just carry your ID with you, its not a big deal to carry it is it?

The law requires shopkeepers to ask for ID from anyone that looks is though they're no more than about 5 years older than the legal age for buying things. My eldest daughter regularly got asked for ID for buying lottery tickets until she was 27, and I was refused admission to a 16 rated film when I was 28! It might be annoying, but you'll be so glad that you don't look your age in a few years from now!

They have to ask very young person for there I D as it is required by law and it is offence to sell to under age people ok the government age is 18 but most shops etc either have 21 or 25 policy so if you are asked for I D and you do not have I D on you then they will not sell the item to you whether it is cigarettes/matches/lighter fuel/or the lottery so my advice to you and anyone is always carry I D with at all times and it is best not to take out on the staff as they are only doing there job !

BECAUSE YOU SHOULD NOT BE SMOKING!!!!! alcohol though, they ask you because you probably look young to them

the vendor is required by law to ask for id. it isn't meant to embarrass you, it is meant to keep underage people from being able to do age restricted things before they are mature enough.

deal with it and enjoy it while you can. once they stop asking , you ll start to feel like you look old.
