"Western imperialism" as if they? wouldn't destroy the traditional cultures of other people in order to impose their own ideas of how things "should be"?
actually I was talking about the ones in the US

One of my fondest college memories revolves around a Political Science class I had, which was taught by a Communist from Ireland.

Practically every class we'd somehow get to talking about the "merits" of Communism. He was so full of enthusiasm and totally committed to the cause. But we weren't buying it, and we (with yours truly at the lead) would relentless pick away at his positions. It was the perfect class for this type of interplay because there were only nine of us, and we sat at a large conference table in a special classroom in the plush library.

He had some wacky ideas and off the wall complaints. For example, he bemoaned how the 1950s show "I Love Lucy" had insidiously infiltrated into the culture of other countries. He made it sound like Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were secretly government agents bent on destroying other cultures by making them want the American lifestyle.

Let's just say we laughed a lot in that class...

The "coup des gras" was that glorious moment when he was summoning up the strength to counter our increasingly effective arguments. He stopped in mid sentence, his eyes widened a bit, and looked a little stunned. He then looked at us like he was seeing us for the first time, and said, "You know, I think I've been wrong about Communism. It just never made sense to me until now."

So it was funny that he denounced the West for supposedly destroying other "weaker" cultures with movies, tv, music, fast food, social mores, etc. But it hadn't occurred to him that when Communists took over a country everything changed... forcibly.
