Where is it safe for an American to travel in Africa?

I'm graduating undergraduate school in under a year and I want to do a volunteer program afterwards. I was thinking about teaching in an orphanage or something, but I don't want to go to countries where my life could be seriously jeopardized. Any suggestions?
 
egypt is the only thing that comes to mind. idk about south africa i heard rumors.
 
Don't be funny. I know you are American but do you seriously think the whole of Africa is some sort of savage widerness? If we were all busy killing each other, there wouldn't be three times as many Africans as there are Americans.
 
By definition you( as a comparatively rich American) will be going to a poorer part of the world.That is dangerous in itself.Do you really think you can empathise and help when you are going off to a nice hotel every night.There are fewer and fewer parts of the world that have a western standard of law/morality.Presumably LA south Central or the Bronx would be a bit of a challenge also(Im not making a UK point here , we got some pretty bouncy places here!)
To summarise , if you want to help youve got to take the risk otherwise stay at home and live a comfortable life(Doesnt that sound terrible!)
