where to start checking to see why suv will not run?

Im going to look at a friends ford explorer,they was driving it and it spittered and sputtered and stoped,I have bumped the key and I could not hear the pump.one person said they heard it when key was bumped,i thinking get a fuel pressure tester and test the pump press. and I thinking there is a fuel filter on the side of the frame by the back door.CAN ANYONE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
is this vehickle METRIC OR STANDARD tools?
 
if the pump don,t kick on when you turn the key on then check the pump relay and the fuse ! most cars today have metric bolts ! if the pump is kicking on then check the fuel filter and fuel regulator ! the regulator is bolted to the fuel rail under the hood ! it could be spark too ! if it,s turns over good then check for spark at the plugs ! no spark could mean a bad coil or module !
