The horizontal line shown on the stick shift in the photo is Neutral.
That's where you can move the stick freely side to side.
(The car will roll when in this position if the hand brake is not engaged)
Up or down, it will be in a gear.
The photo shows Reverse, 1st, 3rd, 5th, gear on top
then 2nd gear is under 1st, and 4th gear is under 3rd.

You need to learn how to drive a stick shift before purchasing this car.
Stick shifts are in an "H" pattern for shifting forward gears.

A BMW is an expensive vehicle to learn on.
It is very easy for 1st timers to burn up a clutch when driving a stick shift vehicle. (Very costly expense to replace a clutch !)
(In any vehicle)
1st timers usually don't have the knowledge on when to shift from one gear to the next, plus you need to downshift before coming to a stop.
It's important to get training from someone that knows how to drive a stick shift.

if your talking bout the neutral gear it if in the exact middle between 3rd and 4th for a 5 speed which that bmw is
and you also could have asked a person in your family or a friend that would know that but at least your trying to figure things out before you act
hope this helped
