Which MacBook Pro do you recommend?

I am older and could use a bigger screen or the higher-resolution 15.4" model. Price is NOT an important factor.

Is the 17" size more of a pain to lug around than the smaller/lighter 15.4" model?

Can I fit enough info on the smaller screen size or would I miss the greater real estate of the larger model?
 
I think the bigger screens are great on PC's. As for portability, you may want to stick with the slightly smaller screen unit. This is just from my experience in toting a laptop around and realizing that its easier to move a smaller unit around. Plus, at 15.4, you aren't gaining or losing much. That's only, roughly an inch and a half. Less if you keep in mind that the measurement is taken diagonally.
