while doing dishes a steak knife got lodged under my thumb nail...?

ok so i am doing dishes, i reach for a spoon and the pointy end of a steak knife is stabbing under my thumb nail. i pull it out and it bleeds. judging by the smudge on the knife it went about 1/2 way down my thumb nail. i assume i will lose my nail. it is painted so i can't see under, i will take the polish off immediately to observe the wound. what else should i do? my health insurance expired at the beginning of this month as i am newly unemployed, so i will not be going to a doctor.
 
1st make sure it stops bleeding. i've gotten cuts under my nail before, but that sounds like it went in pretty far. Also, make sure to use some sort of antiseptic wash on it so it won't become infected! you could also pour peroxide on it(this will hurt).
