Who betrayed Montezuma?

Read this article for exciting juicy details of undearthed remains under Mexico City and what they mean today. The last page colors the scene. Cortes was the conquistador from Spain who was welcomed by Montezuma II into his palace, and gave Cortes riches and dressed him in garments supposed to be worn by the God, Quetzalcoatl. Eventually Cortes was held hostage and wouldn't release the king until he got what he wanted.

Then read the second article for a more boring history, starting with the paragraph on "Conquest of Mexico."

Montezuma, the Aztecs' greatest king, met the Spanish conquistadores first with threats, then with gifts and guile, only to be undone in the end by his own people. The utter rout of the Aztecs, led by Hernando Cortes, swiftly followed.
