Who first misunderstood the term "Xmas" as leaving out Christ?

(Obviously, I know what the term means -- I'm fluent in Biblical Greek -- but I'm asking who first mistook it for an attack on the meaning of Christmas? So please answer my question rather than substituting it with some related question which you are anxious to answer.)
