Who knows the origin of the music genre, "Emo"?

The earliest bands I know of are Relient K and Hawthorne Heights but I'm sure there's others. Green Day?? How did this style come about and which band is considered the first?
 
I'm not sure that Green Day are origins of EMO. Maybe they looks like EMO (just a little), but they always played Punk Rock
