Who "started" rap singing/music?

Who was the first major rap artist.
I saw a comment on a webpage recently that said "white people invented rap, the black people stole it and made it better"

Im not a fan of rap not even slightly so I know nothing about its history or rap culture.

The elements of Hip-Hop date back hundreds of years ago in Africa, though Hip-Hop really didn't get it's start in America and have the groundwork laid for what it would be today until 1973. DJ Kool Herc is seen as the Father of Rap and he's Jamaican. White people had zero to do with the creation of Hip-Hop.

Well it started back in the 70s, but the first major rap artist was probrably Run Dmc, an 80s group. They revolutionized it, by accomplishing feats that paved the way for rappers following them. They got the first rap video to be played on mtv, (Rock Box). The first top 10 rap hit, which is their cover version of Aerosmiths "Walk This Way", and i think they had the 1st rap album to go platinum too. One guy called them "The Beatles Of Hip Hop".
