...religious teaching? The idea that religion should be respected is just another teaching by religious leaders to protect their power base. Why do decent people allow themselves to be influenced by this notion.
We are talking about people who claim to take their moral code from a text celebrating genocide, genital mutilation, threatened eternal torment, and the nobility of Lot for offering his daughter to be gang-raped, (And that is what it says: god especially approved of Lot's behaviour in this instance), to mention a few highlights.
They say their religion is about love, but there is precious little on display in any of their doctrine or stories. They can quote "love thy neighbour ... Etc " as much as they like, actions speak louder. And example of love, for fellow humans, are not exactly prominent in the bible.
Even the great example of "love", giving yourself up to be tortured and killed, or worse giving your son to be tortured and killed (for no good reason since, as god, you could save mankind without this anyway) is a really messed up example for a child of what love is.
But I believe children are much easier to control when they are forced to think about the torture of a lacerated body nailed to a cross.

This message is based on incidents reported in the Old Testament which were not repeated among Christ's followers. In Old Testament days God had a great deal of trouble trying to control an uncivilized and savage population and rarely acts of violence were used to make that possible.

Jesus was sent to teach a new way of behavior, one based on love and forgiveness, putting a stop to the barbarism that some engaged in. Tragically even after more than 2,000 years Jesus' teachings still have not been accepted by many, including some Christians ,who continue to support acts of war and violence to resolve political problems.

At the end of the day, far more evil has been done in religions name than good.

I am polite about other people's faith, but there is no chance of me ever paying them respect.

Respect for what? Being a gullible indoctrination victim?
