Why am I being complained at for asking someone what they would like for Christmas?

My Stepson is complaining that I want to know what he would like for Christmas? Total shock! He likes surprises but as money is tight I would like to know exactly what he would like. How is this unreasonable? Isn't this and Birthday the one time you can get what you want if not available throughout the year? So tempted to just donate his present to charity!
