Chuck's dad was on his way to talk to Lily at the Snowflake Ball in episode 12 of season 2, "It's a Wonderful Lie". It was there that Lily planned to tell him she wanted a divorce.
He got into a car accident along the way, though the specifics are never mentioned. He dies and episode 13, "Oh Brother, Where Bart Thou?" features his funeral.
