I ripped a few DVDs from my collection to my computer using DVD Decryptor. But the files that I ended up with are HUGE, I'm talking 4-5GB per movie. I want to compress these files and also prevent them from getting this big in the first place.

DVD are that big because they are loseless. (uncompressed)

the average size of a store bought DVD is 8 GB.

If you compress them it will severely lower the quality.

This is normal. Since they are uncompressed files, they will be big and high in quality. What you can do is to compress them by using Autogk or a similar program. This programs compress your dvd rip by using Divx or Xvid codecs into more manageable size but reducing quality.
