why are the beliefs of christianity so vague?

They're not, they're specific. However, as people make mistakes, they rationalize them. Then they teach those rationalizations to others, and that creates the vagueness we experience.
The bible literally instructs people to kill gay people. No two ways about it. But people don't kill gay people. And Jesus never said he replaced that law. So they excuse their failure to follow the law by making it vague.

Well defined beliefs are easier to argue against than vague beliefs that can be interpreted several different ways.
