It doesn't matter when fossil fuel supplies run dry for the French because they are better positioned to live without oil than any other country on earth. About 80% of their country's electric output comes from their nuclear power plants, a higher nuclear power percentage (of total power) than any other country on earth by far. This enables them to have the cheapest and most environmentally friendly power production out of any country in the EU; many other countries, especially the USA, rely on coal power and still (unfortunately) on things like oil and natural gas.
Furthermore, France has a state-of-the-art high speed rail network (they are still constructing new lines) that is powered by this non-fossil fuel electricity production; they have the highest rates of inter-city travel anywhere. They might hardly miss their cars if oil became too expensive for them to be driven because the TGV goes up to 320 km/h between cities which are themselves comprehensively equipped with rapid transit and metropolitan lines (like Paris' RER)!
Meanwhile in the US, the fuggin Republicans keep trying to shut down Amtrak, our only remaining inter-city rail company!!! We can't build nuclear plants and whenever we try new capital construction projects to help expand our rail network, the Republicans maliciously stop them like Chris Christie just did with the new Access to the Region's Core project in New Jersey!!!!! My unshakable hope is that the California High-Speed Rail project will not be trashed if Meg Whitman gets into office and that it can be completed and all the major Californian cities can be connected with trains that go 350 km/h (faster than TGVs go now). If this can be realized, it will serve as a nearby successful model to the rest of the country because this country can't seem to wake up and realize how good and prosperous France is with its high-speed network!!
Any Californians out there: please, oh please, do not vote for Meg Whitman and vote smart (yes on Prop. 19, etc.)!
