Why are there BBQ-flavored chips (etc) when BBQ-ing is simply a method of cooking...

...outdoors? Cooking on a BBQ doesn't automatically give it that "BBQ" flavor. What gives?

there two type of BBQ a grill type and a sauce type the grill used both BBQ and you need a sauce for the smokiness

BBQ refers to a sauce that you put on the meat as it cooks on the grill. BBQ flavored chips have BBQ flavoring sprinkled on them once they are cooked. Check out "How It's Made" on TV if you can, or do a search on it. It's a cool show that shows how different things are made. I saw the show about chips & flavored chips.
