Why can't I see the file I shared on my desktop?

I followed a tutorial saying that all I needed to do was right click the folder I wanted to share, and select share and set up the sharing options, which i did. It also said that I need to turn on file sharing. I did that too all on my laptop. and when I went to the desktop computer and opened the network folder it didn't work . but i see the network folder on my laptop. what's the problem???
