I find it strange that the goddess of love, would be in love with the war god. Love and war. Complete opposite, you know? Also Ares was depicted to be terrible and everyone hated him, but yet Aphrodite loved him so much, and she was able to get any guy/god she wanted because of her beauty...What are your thoughts?

If you think love and war are opposites, I have a few ex-girlfriends I'd like to introduce you to.

Anyway, that Aphrodite girl got around. You know she married Hephaestus? The ugly, crippled god whose own mother tossed him off Mt. Olympus when she saw his face. Why would the most beautiful goddess marry the ugliest god, you might ask. Because he worked late - That's why.

Love and war are intimately entangled in the ancient world. In many of the societies that early Peloponnese would have traded with, their love and war deities are one in the same.

Ares is not universally hated. He was a war god, so anyone going to war or engaging in battle would have made offerings and asked for his blessings. Unlike his Roman counterpart (Mars), Ares is also a god of bloodlust and passion. He is the epitome of male virility. Is it any wonder that a goddess of passionate love and children would be attracted to him?

Incidentally, Aphrodite's marriage to Hephaestus is generally depicted as something she entered into under duress. She has nothing but distain for him.

You could say the same for any real-life relationship where it seems strange that person X chose person Y of all the people in the world they could've hooked up with. Love is an inexplicable thing.
