Why did he initiate chat only to make no effort into carrying on the conversation?

He might have wanted to just ask a simple question as a friend.
 
If i wasn't talking to someone i was interested in i wouldn't be like that O_o.
 
Maybe he's a really slow typist. Just don't waste any time on someone like that.
 
Maybe he was toying around with your emotion, wanted to see if you would respond to him, and doesn't want to open up, which most guys don't.
