Why did my package go from Montana to California?

I ordered something on eBay from Montana, and its destination is Saskatchewan (Canada) Which is just up north from Montana. Why would it go all the way to the west, no where near the destination. It said something about "International Dispatch" San Francisco. So what is an International Dispatch and why did it travel way out of its way? Try to explain as if you were explaining to a five year old because its late and Im lazy. Thanks.
