I kept hearing the story about Cuba FINALLY getting access to the Internet in '09 around Christmas time. Why is that? Many other countries, including ours, have had Internet connections for quite a while now.
As first answer indicates, Cuba is a highly controlled dictatorship. The people are prisoners on their own island, not allowed to leave. Castro seeks to maintain power by controlling what the citizens see and learn of the outside world.
