Why do a lot of visible Wing Chun practitioners flurry/chainpunch so much?

Hey people. Here's another martial arts question for you.

From a number of visible Wing Chun practitioners that I see both on the internet and in my kwoon (school), I see that when they do applications... they do the weird two-dozen-in-a-row chain punch combos. Practically, in a real fight, it's a waste of energy, and you expose yourself needlessly, especially if you are being ganged up on. My teacher never advocated the use of this technique, but there are those who seem preternaturally inclined to do it anyway (which really peeves him off), even though he keeps emphasizing every class using just a few effective, hard shots (while parrying) to neutralize the opponent. Thus I feel the rampant chain-punching makes people mistake WC as a "pummeling" style, when it is more (to my understanding) a fluid parrying/counter-attacking style.

So what's with the chain-punching? An exercise of ego, or just plain retardedness? :S
