Why do cellphone and internet providers limit the use of data?

Why do cellphone companies and internet providers, along with car manufacturers ( the gas milege in them is not set too high on purpose) do that?

Are they recording what we visit in a server or do they have too much traffic in the satellites up there? Why do they limit our data usage?
 
because providing data costs money, and if you have a tonne of people eating crap loads of data, the maintenance costs and upkeep explodes.
