Why do GSM (AT&T and T-Mobile) phones interfere with speakers?

Any time my iPhone, or my old Blackberry Curve or my girlfriend's Samsung Galaxy S for that matter (no haters or fanboys!) is near any of my audio equipment, especially the higher end and vintage equipment, there is very serious distortion and interference with the speakers. It's not damaging, I know that much, and that it's only caused by GSM phones, (read: every cell phone in the world that isn't on Verizon or Sprint) So could anyone tell me what causes this, and hopefully a way to shield the speakers from whatever it is in the phone that causes it? Note: I'm putting this under physics simply because it's neither about home theater or cell phones, but rather about frequencies or magnets or something, which would be physics territory.
Ok, cool, but how do I prevent it? And CDMA phones mess with medical equipment such as pacemakers, life support, EKG, and other things. Obviously I'd rather have a GSM phone.
