Truthfully, it is somewhat entertaining to watch. Fighters do throw nice punches and kicks here and there. But I hate it. I hate it because of what it has done to the martial arts community over these years. Why? Let me tell you.
Its taking over the martial arts world, kind of changing it in a way. If I ask a friend would he like to join my karate studio, he just says "No, Im going to take MMA". In a conversation with my friends, I say, what is better - wing chun or jeet kun do? Them, no knowing anything about the history/style of the two, just say MMA or UFC will is better than that 'crap'. And it just keeps happening to almost every guy I ask/talk about martial arts to. Maybe not in the examples I gave but...you know. UFC is taking over, and in my opinion, in a bad way. People not only think MMA is all-powerful now, but now think that BJJ, Muay Thai, and wrestling are the only martial arts out there! (other than karate, taekwondo, the commonly known ones)
I am not saying that any of those style are bad, just too overwhelmed! You wonder why every new UFC fighter always has a black belt in BJJ or JJ, purple in Muay Thai, and a couple years worth of wrestling. The extra sad thing that the popularity of this mainstream BS is getting to the youngsters and now all they wanna take is, again, BJJ, JJ, Muay Thai, or wrestling.
I love karate and wing chun and I try my best to spread the word about them. I even offer to train people myself, by almost always get rejected with a comment about UFC. Everytime I tell a guy, "hey let me show you my special move!" its always "let me show you my submission!" and leaves me with a crooked face. Mixed Martial Arts is supposed to be MIXED with different types of martial art, but with every new fighter the styles keep repeating themselves. Is it me or its this stuff taking over?
*I respect UFC, MMA, BJJ, JJ, Muay Thai and wrestling.
